Connecting a laptop to a LCD / DATA Projector

Step 1: Locating the VGA Connector on the laptop

On the back of your laptop there is a VGA output connector/port. This is the same port which allows you to connect an external monitor to the computer.

Step 2: Locating the VGA Connector on the LCD/Data Projector

On the back of the projector locate the VGA input connector/port.

Step 3: Connecting the Projector

Most LCD/Data projectors work the same way when it comes to connecting to a laptop, or a PC.

Ensure that the projector and the laptop are powered off before making the connection. Using a VGA cable attach the VGA output port of the laptop to the VGA input port of the projector. This connection should be firm and snug.

A loose connection can cause the projected colours to have to a red, green or blue tint.

Step 4: Testing the Connection

To test the connection, power on the projection system and then your laptop. Your laptop may require you to press a combination of keys to activate the VGA port. On most laptops it's the Fn key in combination with the LCD key.

Your laptop may be slightly different so consult the operations manual for your laptop. Other laptops will immediately use the projector. If you do not have a picture you may have to tell the projector that you are connecting to a computer by pressing the appropriate input buttons on the projector.

Step 5: Configuring the Projector

Almost all projection systems allow you to change the brightness and contrast of the image just like a monitor would. In addition, you may need to adjust the size, sharpness, and position of the image itself before beginning your presentation.
